Back in graduate school, a friend of mine used to hold an annual Oscar viewing party. It was a fun way to take a break from studying, and for those of us from California, the tiny glimpse of Hollywood usually helped to temporarily soothe our winter homesickness. While dressing up for the occasion was optional, it was always encouraged; there was an unspoken understanding that the main viewing event of the night was not the awards ceremony itself, but the red carpet arrivals!
My all-time favorite Oscar red carpet looks (besides Björk’s infamous 2001 swan dress) come courtesy of Sharon Stone (1996), Nicole Kidman (1997), and Cate Blanchett (1999). (Apparently, I have a thing for late-90’s fashion right now.) I love the casual, menswear-inspired glamour of Sharon Stone’s crisp white Gap shirt and dramatic Vera Wang maxi skirt. Some might not be a fan of Nicole Kidman’s John Galliano for Christian Dior gown, but I think the chartreuse color and Asian-inspired embroidery are bold, unique, and elegant. And the delicate hummingbird and floral details on Cate Blanchett’s Galliano dress make an otherwise simple silhouette simply stunning. Altogether, I think these looks would still hold up if they were seen on the red carpet today.
The Oscars are soon approaching (February 28th, to be exact!), and while my grad school viewing party days are over, I still plan on watching the awards show (and the red carpet) from the comfort of my living room. Since I don’t plan on dressing up this time around, I’ve put together a “fantasy” red carpet outfit inspired by my favorite looks from the past and my current longing for spring weather. The outfit is pretty Farfetch(ed) compared to what I usually wear, but hey, a gal can dream, right?
